The two faces of the 90s in men’s fashion in autumn 2019

At New York Fashion Week fall winter 2019 2020 Helmut Lang and Opening Ceremony interpret two different souls of an unforgettable decade.

Anyone who thinks that the 1990s were only minimalism and austerity in fashion is wrong. Helmut Lang seems to have come back to prove it, even if his beliefs are based on that minimalism shared with Calvin Klein, occupying the more experimental and less popular side than his colleague.

The brand founded by the Austrian designer and forgotten has come back to life with the creative direction of menswear entrusted to Mark Howard Thomas: the men’s collection has just paraded with the woman at the New York Fashion Week autumn-winter 2019 2020.

The other side of the 90’s, anti-minimalist if you like, is mentioned by Opening Ceremony with the men’s-women’s collection of autumn 2019. Humberto Leon and Carol Lim, who also provided for the rebirth of Kenzo, have created a small collection without fashion show. They preferred to launch a party for the Chinese New Year, entrusting the spread of new fashion for men and women to ad personam meetings with professionals.

But the images say a lot: the two creatives have chosen the characters they love, including designer Anna Sui and composer Ryuichi Sakamoto, to dress them in tailored suits, suit-jumpers as elegant as suits, but rich in color, energetic dusters, sweatshirts and vests of faux fur bizarre. The ’90s were that too.
