Born in Rockford, Illinois in 1980, Virgil Abloh is an artist, architect, engineer, creative director, and designer. After graduating in Civil Engineering at the University of Wisconsin Madison, he received a Masters in Architecture from the Illinois Institute of Technology, in a program founded by Mies van der Rohe. On this occasion he learned the notions of modernist design but also the concept of multidisciplinary work.
The Virgil Abloh brand, Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh™️ debuted in 2012 with a work of art entitled “PYREX VISION.” In 2013 the brand presented for the first time the men’s and women’s collections, parading during the Paris Fashion Week in 2015. Abloh has also presented its work all over the world in major design institutions such as the Harvard Graduate School of Design, the Columbia Graduate School of Architecture, the Planning and Preservation and the Rhode Island School of Design. The sneakers made in collaboration with Nike are one of the media cases and the most important commercial successes of the last years.
His creative talent went even beyond clothing: with Ikea, for example, he created a series of furnishing objects that make people talk and that always create news. In June 2017 he was guest of Pitti Immagine Uomo, where he presented a collection with a scenography created in collaboration with the projections of the artist Jenny Holzer.
In 2019 he will exhibit his main works at the Museum of Contemporary Art of Chicago, Illinois. In 2015, Virgil Abloh for Off-White c / o Virgil Abloh™️ was among the finalists of the LVMH Prize. He has received numerous awards, including the most recent, the British Fashion Awards Urban Luxe award and the International Designer of the Year at the GQ Men of the Year Awards in 2017. Virgil Abloh has just been named new artistic director of Louis Vuitton.
