From the fashion world to the world of eyewear. During Milan Fashion Week MIDO will be held, Milan Eyewear Show (24-26 / 02), the most important event in the world dedicated to eyewear. At GQ we asked eyewear brands to give us some anticipation.
The characteristics of the 2018 glasses
The esthetic forms of MIDO 2018 are the evergreen shapes: from aviator to oversized glasses; from those round the more squared ones passing from the polygons, to the masks and the perennial panto. There is, to put it in short, a more fashionable form: free will is entrusted to the inclinations of the client. The thicknesses are getting more and more fine thanks to the hi-tech solutions. With the exception of the mask fronts, even the volumes decrease in favor of comfort and lightness: increasingly decisive factors for the choice of sunglasses and eyeglasses.
The drop glasses
A drop by pilot or aviator, three ways to define the same shape, that of the legendary Ray-Ban present at this edition with Gaze, a semi-circled metal frame and graduated graduated lenses.
Identical frontal also for ST!NG Trend, but in the transformer version: from view with a mirrored clip-on. The Carrera Glory also belongs to the same category, a bolder and more futuristic version of the classic double deck aviator. To try the customization of the most beloved form also Police with a front characterized by plastic side spoilers. Italia Independent, for its part, with the Superthin model gives the pilot a super-thin metal frame and ceramic nose pads.
We can not speak of a great return because the eyewear panty or pantoscopic (which sees everything) has never given signs of failure. The classic form par excellence has been adopted by many big eyewear from Hugo Boss with the Up-to-date model with double bridge or key bridge and discreet transparent side wings. Ermenegildo Zegna also ventured with a titanium version and a voluminous profile. Same choice also for Tod’s who has enriched the titanium temples of a leather scooby doo. The Firenze model by Lozza by De Rigo Vision is reinforced by a key bridge and a sliding bar on both cilia. Mykita, on the other hand, gives the front piece a minimally visible construction to make Lessrim models lightness samples. Finally, the Magellano model by Barberini Eyewear, in which metal and acetate combine magnifying photochromic or mirror lenses.
The oversized glasses
Another evergreen among fashionable glasses is oversized. This hipster philosophy has been the chair of Tom Ford, whose models are recognized thanks to the T logo on the front. Often acetate, pronounced rods and a marked key bridge also for Dsquared2. And to the 60s lines of the unisex model Isba by Oliver Peoples, I would add to this section the Timberland Earthkeepers sunglasses from the front and the temples made with 35% bio-basic plastic.
Exports to the BRIC countries continue to demand highly visible eyewear forms such as mask models. Among the most irreverent certainly Dolce&Gabbana: a large front lens that continues on the temples and metal structure enriched by the central logo applied on the front. Also important are the glasses from the special Prada Game collection: wide rectangular front with flat lenses, visible screws, thick acetate temples. The unisex mask by Diesel is also noteworthy: a single nylon lens hooks into the upper part of the front panel to a metal bar with a rock effect. There is also the MOMODESIGN appeal, whose unisex Icon model is inspired by the unmistakable carbon fiber mask of the early 80s, but in its lighter and thinner version to be worn even with a helmet. Ultranormal style for the Trussardi mask with a clean and linear design reinforced by a shining bar of metal stripes. Titanium, on the other hand, is the Arc model of Blackfin: made in only 499 pieces, it has won numerous international awards.
Spiky polygonal glasses
All, really all, have proposals with circle or square fronts. But in the flat geometry of the glasses, the polygonal shapes are particularly relevant. Among these Dior Homme with Black Tie 247S, a vaguely triangular graphic frame and the emblematic scar to embellish the thin opti temples. Four sides to form a rectangular trapezium for Prada that gives a small bridge sui generis to the smaller front. The lens of the Tommaso di Neubau model is instead octagonal, proposed in an infinity of materials and colors. And then there is Frank of Neubau Eyewear: marble-effect color and structure in Natural PX, a polymer derived from the castor plant that gives the eyewear lightness, flexibility and durability.
No to counterfeiting
Wearing fake glasses is like an idiot because in addition to compromising eye health, serious damage to the legitimate economy occurs. ANFAO, the National Association of Optical Products Manufacturers and promoters of MIDO, estimates that in the eyewear counterfeiting is responsible every year for the loss of about 15% of the market, in value we are talking about about 100 million euros of turnover in less for Italian companies in the sector and over 500 employees less each year. Do you think if that job was yours?
